there is no flower that i adore more than colorado’s state flower: the columbine. the colors are wonderful with the blues, purples, whites and yellows. the shapes of the back of the flower makes it stand out from the other mountain wildflowers. and it’s not a flower you’ll find everywhere.

so when i do find one, i consider it to be a special occasion.

i chose black and white, foregoing the beauty of the color, in order to concentrate more on the shapes of the flower and the contrasts of the colors. i photographed it with a shallow depth of field to remove the distraction of the grass below. i’ve also used this image as one of my two hand-made cyanotype prints in a printmakers show. cyanotype shows it off very well.
